Did you know turmeric – yes, that bright, yellow spice that is used in curry! – is an amazing nutritional supplement and has major benefits for the human body?

In India, where it’s commonly used, it’s called the “spice of life”. Turmeric is used for many different health ailments, including“the treatment of liver disease, skin problems, respiratory and gastrointestinal ailments, sprained muscles, joint pains, and general wound healing”, according to Dr. Mercola.

It is so good for you that people even take turmeric supplements!

What are the health benefits of Turmeric:

Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric and the reason why turmeric has so many health benefits. It is well know for it’s anti-inflammatory effects and because it is a very strong antioxidant.

Turmeric can help boost your immunity, which is a great reason to take it year round.

In addition to being antiviral (and antibacterial), turmeric is also anti-inflammatory. Chronic inflammation plays a part in so many diseases and issues – including heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and cancer. Reducing the amount of chronic inflammation in your body is super important to keep yourself healthy.

Turmeric also supports digestion, helps relieve gas and bloating, supports brain and joint health, and helps eliminate blood impurities by improving liver function. And if you have trouble sleeping, turmeric is said to aid in sleep.

Turmeric has so many health benefits that it should be part of your regular diet, whether you use it as a spice or to make Golden Milk.

What is Golden Milk?

Golden Milk is pretty much a turmeric tea. There are many different ways to make it but it’s essentially a drink with turmeric powder and a plant-based milk, usually coconut milk.

It might be new to you but it has actually been brewed for its healing properties for centuries in many parts of the world. The curcumin in turmeric has the ability to destroy cancer cells and promote healthy cell function (source), which makes it an important drink to incorporate into your diet.

Drinking Golden Milk any time of the year is good for you, but you can drinking it also during cold and flu season is particularly good because of its antiviral effect. It can even offer some relief for a cough.

Turmeric also helps to relieve headaches due to stress or sinus congestion so it’s a great drink to have when you’re not feeling quite right.

Plus, Golden Milk is so easy (and fast) to make – just as easy as making hot chocolate.

This recipe also contains black pepper because it helps your body to absorb the turmeric. You should always use both black pepper and turmeric together. Black pepper alsostrengthens digestion, helps lower blood pressure, and has antibacterial qualities.

If you make this recipe using coconut milk, you’ll also reap from the benefits of this powerful drink. Coconut milk is not actually milk, buta liquid found inside of mature coconuts, stored within coconut meat (white part of the coconut).

The main benefit in coconut milk is lauric acid, which has lots of benefits including improving digestion and lowering your blood pressure and cholesterol. You can read about the top 9 benefits of coconut milk here.

Where to buy Golden Milk?

The most affordable way to make Golden Milk is by following our recipe below. However, you can buy blends of Golden Milk that you just mix in one cup of liquid. Our favorite ones are:

Golden Milk Recipe

Ingredients:

Directions:

Measure 1 cup of plant-based milk into a small saucepan on the stove. Add in your pepper powder and organic turmeric.

If you’re using a fresh ground pepper, use a mortar and pestle to further grind it into a powder. The finer the powder, the easier it is to mix into the milk.

Bring the mixture to a slow simmer.

Once it comes to a slight boil remove the saucepan from the heat and allow it to cool for a few minutes before stirring in the raw honey. Adding the honey in when the Golden Milk is too hot will eliminate the beneficial properties of the raw honey, so make sure you allow it to cool.

(I’m not always a huge fan of peppery things, so this is noticeably peppery to me- but still enjoyable. After finishing the golden milk I’ll often have just a tiny piece of plain bread to help take away the peppery heat in my mouth, works every time!)

Pour your Golden Milk into your favorite mug or cup and slowly enjoy while still hot or warm! You can also double or triple this recipe if you are enjoying a nice, warm beverage with your friends or family.
