Frequently asked questions

There are just two basic requirements to sign your pet up with Trupanion:

  • All cats and dogs under 14 years of age are eligible to enroll for lifelong coverage.
  • You live in the US, Canada, or Puerto Rico (including US and Canadian military bases).

Please note that we welcome dogs and cats of every shape, size, and breed.

Every pet is different and so is the cost of their insurance. A two-year-old golden retriever in Chicago might have a different monthly cost than a five-year-old female Siamese cat in a rural region. The veterinary care available in your area can also be a determining factor. We encourage you to get a quote or give us a call for a better picture of what your cost with Trupanion will be.

We have made the deliberate choice not to cover routine care, wellness, or preventive care costs. This includes things like wellness checkups, flea and tick control, and exam fees. There is a specific reason for why we do not cover these things, and it’s because we want you to get the most value out of your pet insurance coverage.

When it comes to your pet’s wellness care, we don't believe that we should charge you extra for something that you can expect. Since you know your pet needs routine veterinary care, it’s something you can actually budget for. And when you can budget for wellness care costs, it doesn’t make sense to pay a middle man more to give that same benefit back to you. Trupanion was founded to help pets get the health care they need when surprise illnesses and injuries occur, not to help with regular costs you can predict.

Of course! While we’ll be sorry to see you go, we understand that things in life change. You can cancel your Trupanion policy at any time, for any reason.

Have more questions about how Trupanion works and what to expect with your plan? Feel free to reach out to us at any time. We are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to answer any and all questions.

Most responsible pet parents are able to budget for their dog or cat’s routine care costs. But what happens when something unexpected comes up? This is where pet health insurance can be a lifesaver.

If your pet becomes ill or injured, relying on savings or emergency funds to pay for their veterinary care expenses is a risky option. After all, it can be difficult to know upfront exactly how much their treatment will cost or if there will be complications that require additional care. Having quality pet insurance in place enables you to protect both your pet and your budget by helping pay for these new and unexpected veterinary costs.

For many, that peace of mind alone is what makes pet insurance very worth it.
