Into toll free, 888-629-0094. PARIS -Composer lannis Xenakis, known as one of contemporary music's most innovative and erudite creators, died Sunday in his Paris home, the Association of Friends of Xenakis said. He was 78. Also a mathematician and engineer, Mr. Xenakis first attracted attention as an architect, working with Le Corbusier on the French designer's famous pavilion for the 1958 Brussels World's Fair.

For the fair, Mr. Xenakis composed an electronic work that brought recognition to his musical talent: "Concerto PH," whose sole sound source was amplified burning charcoal. Greek Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos said Mr. Xenakis would be remembered for compiling "one of the most progressive chapters in the history of music." Born in Romania to wealthy Greek parents, Mr. Xenakis moved to Greece at age 10.

He earned an engineering degree at Athens Polytechnic. When World War II began, he joined resistance efforts against German occupation of Greece and suffered an injury that caused the loss of sight in one eye. Under the postwar Greek government, he was condemned to death in 1945, but he fled the country and began a new life in France. The death sentence was lifted 29 years later. In Paris and Switzerland, Mr.

Xenakis took up the study of music. "We will not forget that Iannis chose France for deploying his talent," French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin said in a condolence statement. Mr. Xenakis is credited with inventing "stochastic music," composed with computers and based on mathematical probability systems. One of his electro-acoustic manipulations is the eerie yet delicate "Bohor," using sounds derived from jingling jewelry and coupling freight cars.

He also is widely recognized for such percussion-ensemble works as "The Pleiades." Honored around the world, he won Sweden's Polar Music Prizealong with Stevie Wonder -in 1999. The annual prize goes to one classical and one popular musician. He became a member of France's Academie des Beaux Arts in 1984, won Japan's Kyoto Prize in 1997 and Italy's Critics Prize of Turin in 1990. Professor Murray Edelman; taught unusual view of political science NEW YORK TIMES NEWS SERVICE MADISON, Edelman, who in the 1960s and '70s helped pioneer a new approach to political science by arguing that the true importance of many political acts and institutions often is very different from what it seems, has died at 81. Mr.

Edelman, who died in Madison on Jan. 26, was a professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin from 1966 until he retired in 1990. He believed that public political developments often act as what he called symbols with meanings or purposes that can be determined only by careful investigation. "A fact is always embedded in a theory and has to be interpreted," he once said. For example, he saw the symbolic value of democratic elections as MICHELSON Corinne A.

In Mr. Edelman's view, government programs to alleviate injustices often serve mainly to allay public concern while creating a bureaucracy with a vested interest in preserving the problem it is supposed to, solve. And when political leaders speak of a "crisis," he believed, they actually are giving themselves the right to take unusual action to deal with a situation they believe ordinary people cannot understand.
